We’re inviting expressions of interest from instrumental and vocal tutors across all specialisms who are passionate about inclusive, high-quality music education and excited by the opportunity to be part of a thriving local music education community.

Whether you’re an experienced teacher or a talented performer looking to move into education, we’d love to hear from you.

We are particularly interested in musicians who can offer any of the following:

  • 1:1 and small group instrumental/vocal tuition
  • Primary whole class instrumental teaching (WCIT)
  • Ensemble leadership (all genres)
  • Work with children and young people with additional needs
  • Music technology or creative composition
  • Experience supporting progression pathways and exam preparation (e.g. ABRSM, Trinity, Rockschool)

You will need to demonstrate:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • A strong understanding of safeguarding responsibilities
  • A high level of musical proficiency (typically Grade 8+ or equivalent experience)
  • A professional, inclusive and flexible approach to teaching
  • Right to work in the UK and an Enhanced DBS (you will also need a business bank account)

What we offer:

  • Freelance teaching opportunities across Kingston’s schools and KMS Music Centres
  • A friendly, experienced and supportive music service team
  • CPD, networking and peer support as part of a growing SWL Music workforce
  • Varied teaching experiences with young people and adults
  • Opportunities to contribute to an inclusive programme of concerts, workshops and events

Please note, in order to be paid as a freelance tutor as a sole trader, you will need to have a business bank account for funds to be paid into.

How to Apply

We are reviewing applications on a rolling basis throughout the summer term and will interview shortlisted candidates in late June / early July 2025. Offers of work will be confirmed by mid-July, for a September 2025 start.

This is a forward-looking recruitment drive, so while we cannot confirm exact hours or locations yet, we are aiming to build our panel in anticipation of expanding school partnerships and increased out-of-school opportunities.

How to apply:

  • Read the KMS Freelance Music Practitioner Job Description: Word version.
  • Download and complete the KMS Freelance Music Practitioner Application Form: Google Doc or Word version.
