Tuning the instrument

  • Understand the procedure for tuning the instrument, e.g. turning the machine heads

Set up a tuning game, where learners are asked to identify which string is out of tune.

Large differences in pitch can be gradually reduced as learners’ aural awareness develops.

Demonstrate to learners how to tune the strings of the guitar and the amount of turning required on the machine heads to provide a significant change in pitch. Ask them to experiment by gently tightening and loosening the machine heads.

This activity aims to develop an awareness of the mechanics of the tuning process. It is important to mention that over-tightening of the machine heads can damage the instrument.
