I started piano and clarinet at school. Further education was physics at Oxford for one year, Guildhall School of Music and Drama where I changed to bassoon. The biggest drama of my 4 years there was the Cuban Missile crisis of 1962. I was convinced the end of the world had arrived. Since then I’ve never been able to eat mushrooms.

My first pro job was with the Royal Ballet touring orchestra followed by 30 years as a freelance woodwind doubler (bassoon, clarinet, saxes) in theatres and sessions. Daytime work alternated between arranging and composing for BBC light orchestras and music libraries, and teaching as an instrumental peri in London schools.

In 1991, I invented and brought to market the Lyons C Clarinet, now called Clarinéo.

My first music education publications were with Chester Music: Take Up The Flute/Clarinet; Mixed bag series. For the last 30 years I have published my compositions and arrangements as Useful Music with 95 music books in print and sales of 450,000 copies. 72 of my compositions have been on the grades of the AB and Trinity College syllabuses. My on-going project is www.usefulmusic.com, a sheet music and audio download site.
