Understanding Musical Scores

Added to website 24/04/2019. Updated 06/09/2023.

A free, open access online course that introduces concepts of music notation and how to follow a score.

This course introduces music notation in easy bite-sized steps. It does not teach how to read music, but rather how to understand music notation from single line melodies through to full orchestral scores. It is structured in individual steps and longer sections on a specific type of notation (melody, piano score, orchestral scores) It would make a useful additional resource for GCSE and A-level teaching, it could also be ideal CPD material for teachers who are not comfortable with classical music notation.
