Added to website 29/06/2026.
A complete Year 7 Indonesian Gamelan unit featuring a six-lesson scheme of work, editable student booklet, PowerPoint presentation, ensemble scores, audio examples and practical activities. Ideal for introducing world music through listening, performing and musical understanding.
Bring the fascinating sounds of Indonesian Gamelan into your classroom with this engaging and fully resourced unit, designed for Year 7 students but easily adaptable for other Key Stage 3 classes.
The unit introduces students to the rich musical traditions of Indonesia through a balance of listening, discussion, practical performance and composition. Students explore the distinctive features of Gamelan music, including cyclical structures, layered textures, interlocking rhythms (kotekan), melody, pulse and the roles of different instruments within the ensemble. Alongside musical learning, students also gain an appreciation of the cultural significance of Gamelan and its place in Indonesian traditions.
Included in this resource is a detailed six-lesson Scheme of Work, an editable student booklet, a fully illustrated PowerPoint presentation, original ensemble performance pieces with individual parts, and accompanying audio recordings. The lessons incorporate a range of thinking routines and active learning strategies, including Think–Write–Pair–Share, listening tasks, retrieval activities, group performance, self-assessment and peer evaluation.
The practical activities have been designed so they can be performed on classroom percussion, keyboards, xylophones, glockenspiels or tuned percussion, making the unit suitable for schools without authentic Gamelan instruments.
By the end of the unit, students will be able to identify key Gamelan instruments, describe the characteristics of Indonesian music using appropriate musical vocabulary, perform confidently within an ensemble and evaluate their own performances.
This resource is ideal for teachers looking for a structured, engaging and curriculum-friendly introduction to World Music that develops listening, performing, composing and appraisal skills while broadening students’ cultural understanding.
