Striking the right note: the music subject report

Added to website 17/10/2023. Updated 02/11/2023.

Read our summary of the Ofsted subject report on the quality of music education in the schools inspected in England.

This report evaluates the common strengths and weaknesses of music education and considers the challenges that music faces. The evidence for this report was gathered by His Majesty’s Inspectors and by Ofsted Inspectors who specialise in music and have experience in the primary or secondary phase. The report summarises the main findings, shares recommendations and builds on the music research review, published in 2021.

Gary Griffiths has written a summary document for Music Mark which you can download below.

In October 2023, Music Mark held a webinar with Christopher Stevens, HMI National Lead for Music with a focus on the new music subject report. Watch the webinar.
