Schemes of Work to support the Music Curriculum

Added to website 09/04/2019. Updated 06/09/2023.

5-part lessons for Nursery up to Year 6, to support the Music Curriculum.

The following schemes of work have been written by Denise Barber, Head of Southwark Music Service. It has taken her 5 years to write and she is still adding to it – currently she is working on a folk music unit.

The heart of the scheme is the 5 part lesson which gives the same basic structure from nursery term one to year 6 summer term.

Curriculum music is an emphasis of Southwark Music Service and all but about 10 primary schools (out of 72) now have a regular high level curriculum lesson either led by the Music Service team or by other music specialists employed by the schools. Most use the scheme and it means children are able to have a consistent music curriculum. Because of the 5 part lesson, children are secure and relaxed during the lessons even when there are staff changes.
