Primary Music Toolkit

Added to website 28/10/2026.

This practical toolkit helps primary teachers to spread the magic of music through their inspiring curriculum and to permeate the cultural fabric of their schools.

The ISM Trust, supported by the Schools Music Association (SMA), commissioned the Primary Music Toolkit to help primary school teachers further their self-assurance in teaching music in the classroom.

The toolkit, created by Dr Ally Daubney, explores ideas about music teaching and is packed with practical help and strategies to equip primary teachers with the confidence to lead inspiring musical experiences.

The Primary Music Toolkit was the winner of the 2019 Music Teacher Award for Excellence in Primary/Early Years music.

The toolkit comes in six downloadable parts, relating to:

  • Setting up musical learning in the primary classroom
  • Leading and developing vocal work
  • A brief guide to using musical instruments
  • Composing and creativity – doodling with sound
  • Using technology in music primary education
  • Musical learning in the creative curriculum
