Primary Music Curriculum and Progress Map

Added to website 10/10/2019. Updated 06/09/2023.

This document is designed to give all staff responsible for music teaching within primary schools an overview and expected standard based on key areas (building blocks and strands of learning).

Durham Music Service (lead partner in the Durham and Darlington Music Education Hub) have created a Primary Music Progress Map, to form the basis of the music curriculum. This document is designed to give all staff responsible for music teaching within primary schools an overview and expected standard based on key areas (building blocks and strands of learning).

It is based around 2 key areas:

  • Building Blocks (key knowledge)
  • Strands of Learning (how pupils demonstrate the knowledge)

At it’s heart is the musical glossary (key vocabulary) and how to show this in a practical way, by using and demonstrating this key vocabulary to build knowledge.
