Fantastique

Added to website 22/06/2026.

Explore Berlioz’s Symphonie fanstastique and delve into the world of programme music with Aurora Orchestra in this unit designed for use with KS3 pupils in Year 8 or 9, including a fully-planned 12-week unit, a cover lesson, homework ideas, and a flex-ensemble arrangement of the second movement.

This unit of work offers 12 weekly hour-long lessons designed for Year 8 or Year 9 pupils, depending on their prior musical experience. Using films of Aurora Orchestra’s theatrical performance of Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique, introduce your pupils to programme music and build on their understanding of the elements of music and instruments of the orchestra through composition.

To complement the unit we have also provided a cover lesson that can be delivered by a non-specialist teacher in a non-music room and three homework ideas for use across the term.

Our flex-ensemble arrangement of the third movement of Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique allows children to explore the symphony whilst playing along with members of Aurora Orchestra, with three ‘levels’ of part available:

  • beginner (pre-grade 1)
  • intermediate (grades 1-3)
  • advanced (grades 4-5)
