Aurora and the Magical Toy Box: Creative Music-making in the Classroom

Added to website 25/04/2023. Updated 09/08/2023.

In April 2023, Aurora Orchestra joined Music Mark to discuss its musical resources for Early Years, Key Stage 1, and SEND teachers.

This recorded session introduces how Aurora Orchestra has developed story-telling as a way of engaging young children with classical music, and how related activities can be embedded through not only the music curriculum but also woven throughout the school day.

The recording looks at the pedagogy of learning in EYFS and KS1, focusing on how musical understanding and skill can develop over time. Using films and recordings of the orchestra, it identifies areas of musical development and shows how musical progress can be built upon in small, incremental steps. It also demonstrates how this approach has been used in SEND settings and how it can support learning using strands linked to EHCP targets to become personalised for the individual.

The overarching aims of inspiring, empowering, and demonstrating are at the heart of Aurora’s session, placing emphasis on the importance of the classroom teacher in bringing high-quality music to life through their learning in the classroom.
