What can you gain by becoming a Trustee?

12th September 2025

Music Mark is seeking two Members to be elected to positions on the Board of Trustees and to play a key role in developing the strategic direction of the organisation. We spoke to Charlotte Payne, one of our current Trustees, to find out more about what she’s enjoyed about the role, and how she found the election process.

I’ve really enjoyed gaining insight into the broader landscape of music education across the UK. Being part of strategic discussions and seeing the positive impact Music Mark has on both policy and practice has been incredibly rewarding. I’ve also appreciated connecting with other Trustees and Music Mark staff who are all deeply passionate about music education.

How has Music Mark supported you in your role as a Trustee?

The team is always open to questions, and there’s a real sense of collaboration. I never felt like I was navigating the role alone – there’s a strong culture of inclusion and shared purpose.

Do you have any advice to Music Mark members who may be thinking about putting themselves forward for election?

What matters most is bringing your perspective, your enthusiasm for music education, and a willingness to get involved and learn. The Board really values a wide range of experiences and voices, and your background could offer something unique. It’s a supportive environment and a great opportunity for personal growth and to contribute to positive change.

How did you go about seeking two other Music Mark Members to support your nomination for election?

I reached out to colleagues within the Music Mark network whom I’d collaborated with previously. I explained my reasons for wanting to stand and asked if they would be happy to support my nomination. Everyone was really approachable – it was a good reminder of how supportive the Music Mark community is.

How did you find the election process? Did anything surprise you?

The process felt clear and well-organised throughout. One thing that stood out to me was how reflective it became – writing the statement and thinking about why I wanted to stand really helped me understand my motivations more deeply.
