Take part in our research on sustainability practices

4th July 2024

Music Mark has commissioned a research project to understand what work is already taking place across hubs and services concerning environmental sustainability. The research forms part of our This Is Not A Rehearsal campaign, and will help us to learn more about how we can support our members and the wider sector to respond to the climate crisis. The research is being undertaken by Dr Ross Purves, Associate Professor for Music Education at the Institute of Education, UCL, alongside his colleague Emma Arnott.

Ross and Emma have launched an online survey to form part of this research. We’d like to invite anyone within the UK who works with or for a music service or a music hub to complete the survey, as well as anyone who works for partner organisations that work with a music service or hub to deliver services, or anyone who works for an organisation which makes use of the services of a music hub or service.

Ross recently shared his hopes for the outcomes of this research:

“We hope that our research can help identify working practices and educational approaches which not only enhance environmental sustainability but also contribute to improved financial sustainability and perhaps even highlight innovative forms of creative practice. We think that harnessing the power of music, and of practical musical activities within our schools and communities, has real potential to raise awareness of the issues and give voice to people’s concerns about them.”

The research will help to establish sustainability-related activity already happening across the UK and highlight any barriers or limitations to music hubs, services and partners in developing their engagement in this area. It will also help to identify examples of good practice that could be shared amongst the music education community. We are keen to hear from everyone working for the above organisations, irrespective of the kind of role you have, to gain a full picture of work taking place across the sector.

The questionnaire should take around 15 minutes to complete. You can get in touch with Ross if you have any questions about taking part by emailing r.purves@ucl.ac.uk
