North-East Music Hubs Launch First-Ever Big Orchestral Play Day for Young Musicians
4th September 2025
Tees Valley Music Hub shares information about its upcoming North-East Orchestral Play Day for young musicians to play in a large-scale orchestra and to help engage students from across the North East. Young musicians can apply to participate by Sunday 15th September.
Young musicians from across the North-East are being invited to take part in an exciting new event – the Big North-East Orchestral Play Day – taking place on Saturday 27th September, 10am – 4.30pm at King’s Hall, Newcastle University.
The Play Day, delivered by Tees Valley Music Service in collaboration with the North-East Music Hubs and Newcastle University, offers a unique opportunity for instrumentalists of Grade 5 standard and above to experience the thrill of performing as part of a large-scale orchestra.
Throughout the day, participants will rehearse and perform a variety of repertoire, building skills in orchestral playing and musicianship. Students will also take part in sectionals led by professional tutors and Newcastle University students, gaining valuable insight and coaching from experienced musicians.
The event has been designed to be inclusive and inspiring, with no prior orchestral experience required. Instead, organisers are looking for young people who are keen to develop their playing, meet like-minded musicians, and experience the excitement of large ensemble performance.
The day will conclude with a short performance at 4pm, open to family and friends, showcasing what the young musicians have achieved together in just one day.
Speaking about the launch of the event, Nick Nowicki, Musical Director of the Tees Valley Youth Orchestra said:
“This is a fantastic opportunity for young people from right across our region to come together, share their love of music, and experience the magic of playing in a full orchestra. We can’t wait to welcome them to King’s Hall for what promises to be a very special day.”
Young musicians who wish to take part can apply by completing the online form: https://forms.office.com/r/vtsnskGV0M.
The deadline for applications is Sunday 15th September 2025.
