Bringing Children Together Through Music
20th May 2026

Sheffield’s primary schools are experiencing a wave of connection and community, thanks to a pioneering partnership between Sheffield Music Hub’s One Voice Festival and The Linking Network’s Schools Linking Programme. This collaboration uses the power of music and structured relationship-building to bridge divides, foster empathy, and help children from all backgrounds feel part of a united Sheffield.
The One Voice Festival, run by Sheffield Music Hub, is a flagship massed-singing event where children from schools across the city come together to perform as one choir. The festival, held bi-annually, is renowned for promoting belonging, teamwork, and confidence through music. One Voice’s inclusive approach ensures children from diverse backgrounds share the joy of singing and learn alongside each other, building lasting memories and friendships.
The Linking Network, meanwhile, began its Schools Linking Programme in Bradford in 2001 to bridge social divides and has since expanded to 25 areas across England and into Wales, supporting over 24,000 pupils annually. In Sheffield, the programme is coordinated by DECSY and has been running since 2017, with a focus on strengthening personal development, SMSC, and Ofsted priorities by pairing schools with contrasting demographics.
The partnership formally launched with a pilot at the One Voice Christmas 2024 festival, growing rapidly by Summer 2025. Schools taking part in the Linking Programme were supported to attend One Voice, forming new links and participating in activities like exchanging postcards, video calls, joint rehearsals, and meeting face-to-face at the festival. Teachers and pupils have reported a visible impact: children have built new friendships, challenged misconceptions, and developed greater confidence and empathy. As one teacher shared, “The Linking Network definitely added an extra element to the project … it made them more aware of other schools that were there rather than them being in their own bubble.”
The collaboration continued into One Voice Christmas 2025, with participating schools exchanging bunting, videos, and messages, and meeting for ice-breaker games and joint singing. Teachers praised the project for helping children learn about each other, celebrate their own identities, and enjoy meeting new friends in a supportive environment.
The wider impact is significant. The partnership supports Sheffield’s Safer Sheffield Strategy and has been recognised—by both teachers and external evaluations such as Oxford University’s Social Integration Report—for building respect, confidence, and broadening children’s social networks. For Sheffield Music Hub, the partnership has enhanced the One Voice experience, helping children step outside their comfort zones and grow as learners, friends, and singers.
Looking ahead, the One Voice Summer 2026 festival will see even more schools participating, with links already being established. Organisers are committed to deepening collaboration, using music and relational experiences to make Sheffield a kinder, safer, and more united city for all children.
