ABRSM Launch New Piano Syllabus

8th June 2026

From Beethoven to Barbie: pushing boundaries across repertoire, representation and learner resources

ABRSM has unveiled its Piano Syllabus for 2027–2028, describing it as one of its most varied to date and designed to give learners greater freedom to explore a wider range of music. Covering Initial Grade and Grades 1 to 8 for Performance and Practical Grades, the new syllabus combines established classical repertoire with contemporary music, new commissions and expanded digital learning support.

Alongside works by composers including Bach, Handel, Haydn, Clara Schumann, Florence Price, Prokofiev and Bartók, the syllabus introduces new music by composers such as Nikki Yeoh, Nahre Sol and Santosh Baynes. It also reflects a broader musical landscape, with arrangements from pop, stage and screen, including Billie Eilish’s ‘What Was I Made For’ from Barbie, Taylor Swift’s ‘Enchanted’, music from Wicked, and Hans Zimmer’s ‘Day One’ from Interstellar, as well as international folk music.

A major new feature is the inclusion of free multimedia learning resources with every piece in the repertoire books. Learners will be able to access audio recordings and overhead video performances via QR codes, along with practical exercises and guidance to deepen musical understanding and make practice more engaging. ABRSM says the materials have been created to support both students and teachers and to strengthen the connection with the music beyond the printed page.

The syllabus also expands one-hand repertoire options for Performance Grades 6 to 8, building on provisions already available at lower grades. Beethoven features at both Grade 1 and Grade 8, marking the bicentenary of his death in 2027. According to ABRSM, the syllabus reflects a broader ambition to help more learners see themselves in the music they study, while opening up new ways to learn and engage.
