Music For Youth

MFY was founded in 1970 to provide high quality performance events for young musicians under the age of 21 on a national basis. It is music education charity and National Music Organisation (NYMO).

Over nearly 50 years, an annual cycle of regional and national festivals and showcase concerts has made a significant contribution to the music education calendar, bringing together regional providers and young performers in large scale celebratory events which put their own achievements into a wider national context, and which offer rich opportunities for acknowledging and developing talent. This supports the policy and ethos of the government’s National Plan for Music Education (2011) and the requirements of Music Education Hubs.

Our vision is to be the UK’s most respected provider of musical performance opportunities for young people and a keen supporter and partner of music education. We advocate for the promotion of musical diversity, inspiring young musicians, their peers, teachers and leaders from all backgrounds to progress and showcase the nation’s music.

MFY has a unique role in that no other organisation delivers large-scale performance events for young people on a national basis, which are inclusive of the full range of music types and performing groups. 91% of participants come from state schools, and participation in our events is free.
