James Sargent

Trustee of Cornwall Music Service Trust.

James arrived in Cornwall as assistant music adviser in 1964, having had 10 years successful music teaching experience in Secondary Modern and Comprehensive schools in Sudbury, Suffolk.  Terminology was different in those days, but his approach has always been inclusive, with a particular enthusiasm for vocal work with young people both in and out of class.

In addition to the given pattern of advising the Local Education Authority and schools, his Senior – Henry Mills, encouraged James to foster opportunities for music making in and among schools, as well as in the youth and adult sectors.  After gaining wider experience as Senior adviser for music in Dorset for three years, James returned to Cornwall in 1977, replacing Henry on his retirement. Over the years, James’s interest in creativity broadened his outlook across the performing arts, and in 1989, three years before he retired in 1992, Dance and Drama were added to his brief.

During James’s time in Cornwall, he founded the East Cornwall Bach Festival (1966), Cornwall County Music Service (1969), Cornwall Youth Orchestra (1970), Cornwall Youth Wind Orchestra (1985), and after he retired, the charitable trusts – Music and Dance Education – ‘made’ (1997), and Arts for Health Cornwall & Isles of Scilly (2000).

Together with a growing team of able supporting senior advisory staff, they presented a number of county-wide large scale events.  Carmina Burana (12 Schools,1983), a European Music Year Celebration (1985), Kerrier Music & Dance ’86 (1986), Cornwall County Council Centenary Concert (Cornwall Youth Orchestra side by side with Bournemouth Sinfonietta -1989), Celebration of the Performing Arts (1992)

After 24 years in retirement James was pleased to be invited to join the Board of Trustees of Cornwall Music Service Trust.
