Job Overview

We are seeking highly skilled and passionate instrumental or vocal teachers to join our team. As a visiting music teacher you will be responsible for providing high-quality and inspiring music education to students of all ages and skill levels,

Your primary focus will be on recruiting and teaching group and individual lessons in schools across the county, fostering a love for music, and helping students develop their musical interests.

This role is flexible and can be during school hours, after-school hours, or weekends at one of our Music Centres and requires travel between schools and other music venues.

We welcome applications from teachers of guitar, violin, woodwind and drum kit in the Horsham, Haywards Heath, Crawley & East Grinstead areas. We have a particular need for cello teachers in the Chichester, Midhurst, Worthing & Shoreham areas.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver engaging and comprehensive instrumental music lessons to students, tailored to their individual needs and skill levels.
  • Create a positive and supportive learning environment that encourages students to explore their creativity and express themselves through music.
  • Develop and implement lesson plans that cover music theory, technique, sight-reading, ear training, and performance skills.
  • Assess and evaluate students’ progress regularly, providing constructive feedback and guidance to help them improve their musical abilities (registers and reports).
  • Fulfil day to day teaching administration duties and consulting with parents, schools, and the office (email and telephone)
  • Prepare students to progress their learning through the Records of Achievement and music examinations, competitions, and performances.
  • Collaborate with other music teachers and school staff to organise and participate in pupil recruitment events.
  • Engage in professional development opportunities, mentoring, and quality assurance.
  • Maintain accurate records of students’ attendance, progress, and achievements – using our inhouse database; scheduling; and attendance recording software (SpeedAdmin and Microsoft 365)
Qualifications and Skills
  • Proven experience as an instrumental music teacher, preferably in a school setting including successful small group teaching
  • High level performer able to play one or more musical instruments, with a strong command of music theory and technique.
  • Experience of teaching online via Teams or Zoom is desirable.
  • Excellent communication and people skills to effectively engage with students, parents/carers, and colleagues.
  • Ability to adapt inclusive teaching methods to accommodate students of different ages, learning styles, and skill levels.
  • Familiarity with music examination boards and their syllabi, such as ABRSM, Trinity, or Rockschool
  • Strong organisational and time management skills to effectively plan lessons and manage multiple students.
  • Patience, enthusiasm, and a genuine passion for music education.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications – Outlook, Word, Excel – and able to learn other platforms.
  • Commitment to inclusion and youth voice.
