Role Overview

The Academy of St Martin in the Fields’ (ASMF) Social Purpose programme has significantly developed over the last three years. 2026/27 will be the first year of truly year-round activity, with the launch of major new partnerships and the establishment of projects which have been trialled through the last season.

The Social Purpose Producer leads the delivery of our Social Purpose work, supported by the Head of Social Purpose and the Performance & Projects Assistant, and working closely with our musicians and workshop leaders. They will take key leadership responsibility in particular for our work with people experiencing homelessness, manage and oversee parts of our talent development offer, and support the delivery of our musician-led Marriner Projects.

Our Social Purpose programme has two main strands:

1. Creative Projects with people experiencing homelessness

Since 1999, ASMF has delivered creative music-making projects with people experiencing homelessness. Over the last three years we have grown our partnerships to work year-round with centres across the city. In September 2026, we will launch a new programme – Ensemble Unheard: a musical community of people from all walks of life who come together to create and perform. This brings together people who we meet in our work with frontline centres to work alongside ASMF musicians in a space build on trust, curiosity and creative risk.

“One of the things about being in this situation is that you become disconnected from society, and because your only social network are people in the same situation, it becomes a bit of a self-reinforcing ‘doom loop’. This has helped break that cycle. You get a bit of pride and confidence back, build new connections where you’re needed, wanted, your input is valued, get some creative juices back… you can take that away and realise you’re still capable of great things.” Anthony, Programme Participant

2. Talent Development

Supporting the next generation of brilliant, empowered musicians is a core priority of ASMF. In our 26/27 year, we launch in full our Associate Fellowship scheme for early-career players, run the first year of our chamber coaching opportunities for schools, and launch significant new partnerships, alongside ongoing work with partners including Sinfonia Smith Square.

“I can honestly say that being a Fellow of ASMF has been one of the highlights of my musical journey to date. Arriving into my first rehearsal with them back in February, I very quickly realised that this is not just an orchestra, but a family. My confidence performing in chamber music settings and in player-led ensembles has grown so much throughout the scheme. It was amazing to receive specific chamber music mentorship from an orchestra of this calibre.” Anna Mitchell, Associate Fellow 2026

About the Academy of St Martin in The Fields

Founded in 1958 by Sir Neville Marriner, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields has evolved into a musical powerhouse, an orchestra renowned across the world for its commitment to the musical freedom of its players and the sharing of joyful, inspiring performances. Our player-led approach empowers every member of the orchestra. This creates a direct line and electrifying connection between the orchestra and our audiences, resulting in ambitious and collaborative performances that transcend a more traditional conductor-led model.

Beyond the concert hall, our commitment to a social purpose manifests in impactful projects that harness the power of music to empower people. We have a longstanding history of work which connects with people experiencing homelessness, and our education projects encourage autonomy and creativity among emerging musicians worldwide. Our collective artistic responsibility fosters enduring collaborations with world-renowned soloists, exemplified by our 15-year partnership with Music Director and virtuoso violinist Joshua Bell. These collaborations showcase the benefits of trust and true artistic collaboration developed over time.

Building on its rich global legacy, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields remains one of the world’s most-recorded orchestras, igniting a love for classical music in people around the world through live performance and digital initiatives. Today, we continue a busy international touring programme alongside a significant presence in the UK – making us one of the country’s most celebrated cultural exports.

About Our Company Culture

We believe that we get the best results by involving our musicians in the planning and delivery of our work, and by being open and transparent about the opportunities and challenges faced by the orchestra. Our office team is agile, committed and friendly – we believe in ensuring that people have the opportunities to develop their skills and grow in their roles. The culture is non-hierarchical, and we encourage everyone to share ideas and suggestions for the future of the orchestra. We trust the individuals in our team to deliver their work and to shape their working days in the way that best suits them, with a genuinely flexible approach to office vs home working. We believe that working in our industry should be rewarding and enjoyable, and work hard to ensure our working practices empower our team members so that they can do great work in an environment that is genuinely supportive and fulfilling.
