Job reference number: SMS-07
The Music in Secondary Schools Trust
MiSST aims to transform the lives of young people through classical music education. MiSST currently works with 21 schools in the UK. We work in schools that serve disadvantaged and often challenging communities by providing not only funding for classical instruments, but also support in the form of regular tuition, opportunities to perform and a programme of excellence that is unrivalled in the UK. Our mission is to be at the forefront of classical music education.
The Saturday Music School
The Saturday Music School is MiSST’s flagship “Excellence Programme” designed to provide opportunities for MiSST’s most able students to play with others at a similar standard, which may not be available at individual schools. The SMS has a wonderful team of tutors and an extremely welcoming and supportive atmosphere and currently features full orchestra rehearsals, sectionals, chamber music and works for concert band and string orchestra, with plans to expand towards September 2022 and become the MiSST Music Academy.
Students are expected to be at Grade 3 + or equivalent in their instruments in order to join the Saturday Music School, but we have many students of Grade 5-8 standard. Pre-Covid the SMS had regular attendances of around 60 students. We hope to have around 75 attending regularly by the start of the Spring Term.
As the Saturday Music School has expanded over the last 3 – 4 years, so has its team of tutors. This will be the first time the SMS will have a full-time percussion tutor and in doing so hope we can retain and expand our percussion section moving forward.
LocationThe Saturday Music School is currently located at City of London Highbury Grove School, 8 Highbury Grove, London N5 2EQ
We are currently seeking an experienced orchestral percussionist to join our team of highly skilled orchestral tutors.
There are currently six orchestral tutors at the SMS (4 strings, 1 woodwind, 1 brass). All orchestral tutors are highly experienced orchestral players with a wealth of professional experience. Our tutors should attend all SMS rehearsals (dates below).
The SMS is organised and conducted by Jonathan Gibson (MiSST Director of Excellence Programmes) and administrated by Olivia Hemmings (MiSST Operations Officer).
MiSST’s annual residential course to Radley College takes place between the 5th – 14th July 2022, with the SMS attending from the 8th – 11th July – every effort should be made by our tutors to be available for this portion of the Radley Residential.
The principle responsibilities of the role of Orchestral Percussion Tutor are as follows:
- To attend the Saturday Music School every Saturday (dates below) between the hours of 9:45am and 1:15pm (the SMS runs from 10am-1pm but percussion set up and pack down is essential – tutor will be remunerated for the additional 30 minutes)
- To attend and assist during rehearsals (full orchestra, sectionals and concert band)
- To be enthusiastic, encouraging and empathetic towards our students
- To resolve problems discretely during rehearsals
- To give clear advice and training on orchestral playing, discipline and techniques

- To fairly decide, alongside the conductor, how the percussion parts are allocated
We are particularly encouraging Black and ethnically diverse and/or disabled applicants to apply.
