The Head of Musical Progression will play a key role in the success of this musical vision with overall key responsibilities including musical progression routes, staff training, online tuition development, expansion of contemporary music provision and the nationally renowned Hertfordshire County Youth Music programme.

The role will also oversee and develop a new teacher development and training scheme as well as implementing a revised gifted and talented scheme.

As part of a renewed Hertfordshire Music Service (HMS) Music Leadership Team, this role will utilise a strong knowledge of the National Plan for Music Education as well as other research from around the world to advocate effectively for music education at all stages. The role will also ensure the Hertfordshire Music Service (HMS) offer is relevant to young people and that the service remains a national exemplar of high quality, inclusive music education.

Main Areas of Responsibility

  • Oversight of the working group responsible for designing and implementing an informed CPD programme to ensure HMS and its staff are able to deliver a relevant offer in a quickly evolving and changing landscape a variety of educational settings.
  • Strategic oversight and development of inclusive musical progression routes within a wide variety of musical styles from EYFS through to post-16 education, county youth music groups and music industry opportunities.
  • Responsible for the overall exam offer and partnership development with exam boards including ABRSM, Trinity, RSL and MTB.
  • Oversight of the blended learning offer, online tuition and digital learning
  • Overall responsibility of countywide projects, courses and events
  • Development and implementation of a progressive and innovative Rock & Pop programme
  • Development of music production and technology provision
  • Oversight of the renowned Hertfordshire County Youth Music groups
  • Development of a revised Gifted and Talented programme
  • Lead and develop a revised ‘intern scheme’ at HMS for young graduate musicians to gain skills and experience of instrumental music tuition.

The duties and responsibilities listed above describe the post as it is at present. The post holder is expected to accept any reasonable alterations that may from time to time be necessary.

Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge and Experience

  • Educated to RQF level 6 or equivalent in music and strong experience in instrumental music tuition
  • Evidence of designing and managing a successful continuing professional development programme, particularly for a large workforce
  • Good knowledge of the wider impact of music education with an understanding of related research, advocacy and pedagogical development
  • Experience of delivering high quality, progressive, community based music activities to learners of all ages
  • Detailed knowledge and understanding of the developing responsibilities of Music Hubs
  • Strong experience and understanding of many musical styles, particularly contemporary genres and digital music disciplines
  • Proven successful project management and experience of budget management
  • Evidence of successfully providing musical, educational and personal outcomes for young people through the delivery of high quality instrumental music programmes
  • Evidence of strong stakeholder management skills, particularly with Music Hub partner organisations
  • Experience of coaching and mentoring
  • Strong ICT, people management and communication skills
