Head of Brass

The Music Service is seeking to appoint with effect from 1st September 2019 an experienced, dynamic and well-qualified Head of Brass with the vision and energy to lead and take responsibility for the work of the Brass Department and to make a full contribution to the ethos, identity and work of the Service.

The person appointed will work in the Island’s schools, teaching from beginner to diploma level, leading and directing the work of the Brass Department under the direction of the Head of Service. He or she must be able to enthuse and inspire pupils, have a secure understanding of the place of instrumental tuition within the school music curriculum and demonstrate by example a personal commitment to music in the wider community of the Island.

Candidates must have the ability and versatility to direct instrumental groups of varying levels to a high standard at Guernsey Music Centre.

The successful candidate will lead by example and be able to demonstrate excellence in teaching and learning, have first class communication skills and the ability to maintain productive relationships with pupils, parents and staff. They will have the ability to model good practice and will be expected to contribute to and impact upon Service improvement.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a committed team of teachers in an established Service with a reputation for high standards, recognised as making a very significant contribution to the Island’s cultural life. Around 800 pupils attend the Centre each week and the range of groups includes 7 orchestras, 7 bands and 6 choirs. Most Music Centre rehearsals take place on Saturdays, and teachers work Tuesday through to most Saturdays during term time. Instrumental lessons for older pupils usually take place outside curriculum time. The average standard of instrumental pupils in Year 13 is Grade 7.

Salary: Main Pay Scale – £30,249 – £43,435 or Upper Pay Scale – £45,872 – £48,791 (plus Management Allowance 2) per annum
