County Orchestras & Ensembles Manager

Hertfordshire Music Service (HMS) are seeking an enthusiastic and musically knowledgeable Orchestras and Ensembles Manager to lead on the delivery of the HMS County Activities orchestral programme, with scope to develop additional events for young musicians that complement and provide progression opportunities from the existing provision already in place across Hertfordshire.

HMS is one of the largest and most successful music services in the Country, with a national reputation for excellence, opportunity and delivering common good activities. With over 560 instrumental and vocal teachers teaching over 10,000 children in schools and our music centres across the county, HMS has a complex staffing structure and a wide reach, with a presence in most major Hertfordshire towns.

This new, exciting role directly contributes to the continued transformation of HMS through supporting the service to realise its ambitious ‘Musical Voices’ vision.

In filling this exciting opportunity, we are looking for candidates who have:

– Educated to RFQ level 6 (degree level) or equivalent in music (classical music is desirable), music management or equivalent orchestral management experience

– Full clean manual driving licence

– An excellent understanding of the needs and requirements of orchestral musicians and thorough knowledge of orchestral repertoire

– A wide-ranging knowledge of standard jazz band, brass band, wind orchestra and youth choir repertoire and the requirements of these ensembles

– Experience of concert or course management with an understanding of safeguarding, health & safety and live music events

– The ability to understand the practical implications of a musical score e.g. regarding instrumentation and stage layout

– Experience of managing a busy workload with particularly busy ‘peaks’ of work

– Experience hiring and preparing ensemble/orchestral music

– Experience of stage management

– Experience of line management and managing customer relationships

– Exceptional attention to detail

– Experience of project management and a range of IT systems, technologies and databases

– knowledgeable of classical music and the requirements of orchestral musicians

– Knowledgeable of multiple instrument types (e.g. strings, woodwind, brass)

– Understanding of the needs and requirements of orchestral musicians and thorough knowledge of orchestral repertoire

– Experienced in music education or working with a music education organisation

– In possession of a full and clean driving licence

– Comfortable with a ‘rolling our sleeves up’ mentality

– Able to work to a high level of professional integrity and creditable in your personal brand, ensuring our wide array of stakeholders have confidence in their HMS colleagues.
