ALPHA Youth Choral Leader

£30,000 – £42,000 per annum

ALPHA Choral Courses seeks an ambitious and dynamic choral tutor to lead our up-and-coming feeder choir programme (ages 3 – 6 and 6 – 10) in Shenzhen, China. This role will ideally run from March 2019, although candidates who are able to start in July or September 2019 will also be considered.

ALPHA is a pioneering youth music organisation based in Shenzhen, China. ALPHA seeks to open the door for young people to explore their musical potential via a range of exceptional choral opportunities designed to promote and nurture enjoyment of music making. This is achieved through exposure to a wide range of international choral methodologies and curriculums, delivered in fun and interactive sessions by a team of top-class international tutors.

These opportunities include:
• On-campus choral rehearsals and after-school choral classes
• Winter and summer choral courses
• Weekly rehearsals for the ALPHA Youth Choir (ages 3 – 15)
• Choir conductor training

Within the ALPHA Youth Choir, there are three subdivisions according to age and ability: ALPHA Zero (feeder choir), Alpha Original (general choir) and ALPHA Plus (performance choir). Each group participates in public performances on both domestic and international stages.

ROLE DESCRIPTION
We are seeking a passionate and dynamic choral leader to join the ALPHA feeder team (ages 3 – 6 and 6 – 10). The appointed person will be responsible for the delivery of a Kodaly-based music education programme to local children in Shenzhen, via choral courses and weekly choir rehearsals.
This is a 3-month*, full-time post (40 hours per week), that can be extended up to either 6 months or 1 year.

Primary Responsibilities:
• Planning and delivering lessons in accordance with the syllabus, for students aged 3-6 and 6-10 within Shenzhen (focus on Kodaly method)
• Programming and conducting performances for the ALPHA Youth Choirs, including involvement in related promotional campaigns
• Helping to programme and lead ALPHA choral courses

Further Responsibilities:
• Monitoring and recording students’ progress
• Communicating with parents regarding student progress in person and via written reports, with the help of local staff
• Establishing and maintaining standards of student behaviour
• Liaising with ALPHA’s UK music director regarding the ongoing development of the curriculum
• Acting as an advocate for the work of ALPHA

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Essential:
• University education (or equivalent) in a music-related subject
• Fluent English speaker
• Experience teaching primary and/or early years
• Experience in choral leadership (e.g. conducting, workshop leading)
• Experience in repertoire planning
• Excellent leadership skills
• Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
• Understanding of vocal technique
• Knowledge of the Kodaly method

Desirable:
• Professional teaching and/or conducting qualification
• 3+ years teaching experience
• Experience in parent/teacher communication and reporting
• Familiarity with Microsoft and Sibelius software
• Piano competency
• Familiarity with Chinese culture

SALARY
£30,000 – £42,000 Per Annum, (in accordance with experience)

Additional remuneration:
• Return flights from your home airport to Shenzhen (start and end of contract)
• Hotel accommodation for the first week of the contract
• Provision of housing, if required (to be negotiated against salary)
• Visa application fees and application support
