World Music in the Classroom

In this one day workshop, aimed at teachers of Key Stage 2, 3 and 4, you will learn how to incorporate world music techniques and content into your music lessons. Over the course of the day, author and award-winning school music teacher, Patrick Allen will take you through the following programme:

10 – 10.30am: Introduction – Short introductory presentation from Patrick Allen, covering:

● His experience working with world music in a multicultural, multi-faith comprehensive school

● Using techniques, structures and practices from World Music traditions to :

a) develop musicality, performance skills, creativity and self-expression

b) build cohesion in the classroom

● Assessment techniques appropriate to world music traditions

● How to channel and focus the musical cultures in your school and community

● Overview of the day to come and intended outcomes
10.30 – 11.30: ​Composition​ (incorporating easy-to-grasp compositional techniques from oral musical cultures)

● You will learn: Using scales, structures, practices and techniques from world music traditions to create accessible and enjoyable composition projects
11.30 – 12.30pm: ​Listening​ and analysis (how to listen to and describe music from non-western cultures)

● You will learn: How to use listening activities to better understand musical techniques, purposes and cultures, and as an introduction to composing work and cross-curricular projects.

12.30 – 1.30pm: Lunch break
1.30 – 2.45: ​Performance: ​From classroom to choir (getting your class to sing)

● You will learn: Songs from a variety of global cultures to use in your classroom and choir; how to develop simple and more complex part-singing

2.45 – 3.45pm Wrap up and resources (websites, materials, publications and contacts of world musicians who can provide in-school workshops)

3.45 – 4pm: Certificates

At the end of the day, you will come away with three lesson plans tailored to the Key Stage group you work with, resources which will help you create world-inspired diversity and joy in your music lessons, and a certificate of participation.
