What Can Music Educators Learn from the World of Music Therapy?

  • 13th January 2027
  • 10am - 11.30am
  • Online (Zoom)

Learn how to work with, and learn from, Music Therapists and Music Therapy in order to better support the young people you work with.

Music therapy sessions are relational and responsive, often including elements of improvisation, songwriting, and active listening. Though sessions have a therapeutic focus, musical skills are developed, and musical identities formed.

There is a strong tradition of research and reflection on practice among music therapists, as well as fantastic examples of therapists and educators working together to maximise the benefits of music provision in specialist settings.

This session takes collaborative further, creating a forum for experienced music therapists to share research and practice that can inform and strengthen the work of instrumental and classroom teachers. Each practitioner will share some key transferable approaches to practice, and then the space will be opened for questions and discussion.

Who should attend?

  • Practitioners who work in specialist schools, inclusion bases and alternative provision
  • Practitioners who run nurture groups
  • Practitioners who work with neurodivergent pupils and pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs
  • Music therapists who work in education contexts
