Providing Equitable, Diverse & Inclusive Music Teaching | The Secondary Music Teaching Series

This session is framed on one of the three pledges that schools will agree to if they receive a Music Mark of Recognition from their music service:

[Our School/ Academy will…] Provide an equitable, diverse and inclusive music education for every young person

• How do we ensure an inclusive musical offer in schools with views becoming increasingly polarised in society?
• How best do we support all learners with funding squeezed, historical damage to the reputation of our subject, and competing priorities?
• How do we ensure that music remains in its rightful place as a leading light in the wider life of many schools?

Jenetta Hurst will explore these questions and give guidance on curriculum approaches that incorporate and promote inspirational diverse ethnic representation and content. She will share strategies for facilitating inclusive and joyful music rooms for students with special educational needs and disabilities.

Jenetta Hurst is a music specialist, flautist and school leader with 19 years’ experience leading secondary music in a range of settings. Jenetta sits on the Strategic Board of Lambeth Sounds Music Education Hub and is an Honorary Member of the Birmingham Conservatoire.
