Open Day for Teachers & Players of Stringed Instruments

A day of music and insights into the wonderful world of stringed instruments from top performers, leading experts and talented borrowers from the Benslow Music Instrument Loan Scheme.

Established in 1932, the Benslow Music Instrument Loan Scheme offers talented young musicians affordable access to high quality instruments.

In our Open Day on Sunday 27th April, we invite all interested to join us in exploring the wonderful world of string instruments and celebrating the talented young musicians we support. The day will be of special interest to young string players and string teachers keen to learn more about how to go about choosing an instrument. Expect to enjoy:

  • Talks from top experts and performers including Barbara Meyer (Curator of Instruments, Royal Academy of Music), Joely Koos (cellist and educator), and Adam Whone (renowned violin dealer and maker)
  • Live demonstrations of violin and bow making as well as 1:1 assessments of attendees’ own instruments from members of the British Violin Makers Association
  • Musical moments throughout the day from current borrowers from the Instrument Loan Scheme

Rounding off the day, renowned conductor Peter Stark will lead an ensemble of talented young borrowers from the Instrument Loan Scheme in the following programme at Hitchin Town Hall:

  • Dag Wirén: Serenade
  • Edward Elgar: Serenade for Strings in E minor Op 20
  • Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Divertimento in D Major, K136 “Salzburg”

Daytime events on campus run between 11:00 and 16:00 and are free to attend, though we kindly ask that you let us know you are coming by filling in the short form linked on the event page.

Tickets for the Celebratory Concert – 16:30 until 17:30 at Hitchin Town Hall -​ cost £10. Our Eventbrite booking page can also be found linked on the event page.
