Supporting Neurodivergent Children in the Early Years
Exploring what it means to be neurodivergent and how musicians can create environments and experiences that support children.

When supporting neurodivergent children, it is important to understand their sensory, communication and learning differences in order to provide safe spaces where they can engage, explore and grow. This workshop will explore what it means to be neurodivergent and what you can do as a musician and practitioner to create environments and experiences that meet children where they are at while adopting a strengths based approach that promotes fun and participation.
Key learning:
- Developing a joint understanding of neurodivergence
- Understanding sensory processing and a child’s unique sensory profile
- Building safe relationships through intentional interactions
- Exploring the role of executive functions, a stage not age approach
- Supporting autonomy through collaboration and participation
