MEC Seminar: Music and Social Justice

  • 14th October 2021
  • 10.00 - 12.00
  • Online

This seminar brings together a range of voices working in music and music education to discuss the impact of music on social justice, exploring themes of music and victims of conflict, social mobility and levelling up, the impact of long-term investment in children and improving awareness and understanding of disability through opportunity.

We will explore the themes of music and victims of conflict, social mobility and levelling up, the impact of long-term investment in children and improving awareness and understanding of disability through opportunity.

We are delighted to be joined by Nigel Osborne MBE, who has pioneered methods of using music and the creative arts to support children who are victims of conflict. He was awarded the Freedom Prize of the Peace Institute, Sarajevo, for his work for Bosnian children during the siege of the city. The seminar will include a presentation from Paula Kemp, Head of Employer Engagement at the Social Mobility Commission, who will share details of a toolkit they have published to support employers within the creative industries to build socio-economic inclusion into their workforce.

Dr Olivia Gable will also be joining the seminar to discuss findings from the recently released report, Social mobility in the creative economy: Rebuilding and levelling up? The research is part of a three-year programme, led by the PEC, working in partnership with the Social Mobility Commission and Creative Industries Federation, exploring class in the Creative Industries.
