Instrument + Musician = Music

  • 30 April 2025

An exploration of what makes a musical instrument, with specific focus on accessible digital musical instruments.

For the second year running, Drake Music Scotland are partnering with MEC to discuss issues affecting disabled performers and composers. This year we want to explore musical instruments, specifically digital musical instruments. Joining us for Musician + Instrument = Music are Kris Halpin as Chair known as an expert in MiMu Gloves; Clare Johnston who performs using iPad; Jess Fisher who plays with CMPSR; Alessandro whose instrument is Clarion; and Rhona Smith who plays Digital Harp.

Our panel will be discussing and introducing themselves and their own digital instruments with short performed examples. They will also be discussing technology as instruments, public perceptions of the use of technology especially when performed by a disabled person vs the realities of the complexities of what is being played.

A panel discussion chaired by Chris Halpin, with:

  • Clare Johnston
  • Allesandro Vazzana
  • Jessica Fisher
  • Rhona Smith
