Inclusive Music Teaching CPD

  • 7th March 2026
  • 09:30 - 16:00
  • The American School, 1 Waverley Place, London, NW8 0NP

Join us for this practical CPD day led by Shirley Salmon supporting music educators to meet current Ofsted expectations around inclusion. Explore how the Orff Approach enables all learners to participate through accessible, high-quality music-making.

This one-day CPD course explores how the Orff Approach can be used to create genuinely inclusive, engaging, and accessible music-making for all learners. Led by internationally renowned Orff practitioner Shirley Salmon (President of the Orff Forum Salzburg), the course offers a rich blend of practical activities, reflection, and discussion rooted in inclusive pedagogy.

Responding directly to current Ofsted guidance and the increasing need for inclusive practice across education settings, this course supports music educators to adapt their teaching so that every child can participate meaningfully, regardless of ability, background, or need. Through singing, movement, speech, and simple instrumental work, participants will experience how inclusive strategies can be embedded naturally within high-quality music teaching.

The day will focus on:

  • Creating accessible musical starting points for mixed-ability groups
  • Adapting activities to support SEND and diverse learning needs
  • Building inclusive classroom cultures through collaborative music-making
  • Using the Orff Approach to remove barriers to participation

The course is highly practical and suitable for teachers working across the primary age range, specialist settings, as well as music hub staff, peripatetic teachers, and community music practitioners. No prior experience of the Orff Approach is required.

Participants will leave with practical ideas, adaptable resources, and renewed confidence to develop inclusive music lessons that celebrate creativity, collaboration, and musical expression for all.
