First Aid for Youth Mental Health with Soundcastle
Obtain a FAA Level 2 Award / SCQF Level 5 Award in First Aid for Youth Mental Health (RQF) and tools to help you support young people’s mental health. The course is lead by Soundcastle, the music charity looking to boost wellbeing, build confidence, reduce loneliness, and support communities.

This qualification has been designed with children and young people in mind covering areas such as depression, self-harm, eating disorders and bullying and will provide the knowledge and skills to identify a potential mental health condition, start a conversation, and provide support and guidance to professional help. Learners will not diagnose or treat mental health conditions as this can only be carried out by healthcare professionals but will gain the knowledge to identify when a person may have a condition and know where they can go to get help.
Delivered by Soundcastle, their instructors have a deep knowledge of the music education sector, having first hand experience of teaching music in primary, secondary and higher education both as classroom and peripatetic teachers. In addition to this, their community engaged practice sees them making music in mental health specific settings – consequently the case studies and experience they bring to these sessions are highly relevant for our sector.
A range of First Aid for Mental Health related subjects will be covered including:
- What is first aid for youth mental health?
- Identifying mental health conditions
- Stress
- Mental health conditions
- Drugs and alcohol
- Bullying (including cyber bullying)
- First aid action plan for mental health
Certification
A Level 2 Award (Level 5 in Scotland) in First Aid for Youth Mental Health will be issued to the learner, subject to successful assessment. The qualification is valid for three years from the date of achievement. The learner will need to complete the full course again to requalify for a further three years.
