Expression, Communication and Creativity in Music Performance

Researchers at the Department of Music at The University of Sheffield have investigated various aspects of music performance, teaching and learning that is relevant for instrumental teachers and musicians. Findings of this research will be presented and implications explored in a series of workshops on the 12th of October.

Researchers at the Department of Music at The University of Sheffield have investigated various aspects of music performance, teaching and learning that is relevant for instrumental teachers and musicians. Findings of this research will be presented and implications explored in a series of workshops on the 12th of October.

We would like to invite you to participate in the workshops and explore with us how research findings can be applied to music performance and pedagogy in practice. Anyone with an interest in the workshop themes and active in music teaching or performing is welcome  to attend. We would like to invite you to bring your instrument, so you can join in with the workshops. A piano is available for pianists. The workshops will address:

  • Teaching and learning of expressive performance;
  • How can we teach performance expression effectively? Can children learn expressive performance?
  • How do we communicate and teach timbre in piano performance?
  • Communication and decision making in ensembles
  • How can we teach improvisation in classical music?

By taking part participants have the opportunity to network and develop their professional practice.

Certificates of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) will be available on request.

For those of you who attended last year, the workshops are a development of a selection of last years’ workshop. You are welcome to attend again.
