Digital audio workstation controls

  • Manipulate the dynamics and audio listening field of a piece of music, either to create a balanced piece or to create rhythmic interest within it

Within Live Loops, encourage learners to use the volume fader in real time to manipulate the volume of individual samples and create rhythmic interest. Help learners to understand that loops with longer, sustained pitches are more suitable for this, and show them how to use the ‘record loops’ function to create their own appropriate musical samples for this. Ask learners to a specific track’s pan with consideration to how it fits within the stereo field.

When using the sequencer in GarageBand, ask learners to use the volume faders to alter individual instruments or samples to create a balanced piece of music. They can use the ‘Track Pan’ feature with consideration to how it fits within the stereo field.

When using certain appropriate virtual instruments (e.g. piano/synths), ask learners to change the velocity parameters to allow them to play softly or loudly. They can further manipulate the depth of the parameter by altering the velocity control and use this feature to play with added expression.
