P3 - B1

Sounds, instruments and sample selection

  • Select and record specific sounds that convey their intention, with thought given to duration and tonality

When using the Live Loops feature within GarageBand, encourage learners to continue to choose samples from a menu of pre-set genres (e.g. EMD, Hip-Hop, Dubstep) which reflect their intention. Ask learners to further edit specific samples from within these templates and select new samples from the Apple Loops menu, encouraging them to think both the number of bars a sample is and its tonality. By double-tapping an empty cell, learners can record their own audio and directly create new and unique samples to be used within Live Loops.

When using the sequencer in Garageband, ask learners to select suitably complimenting loops, samples and instruments that reflect their intentions. Ask them to record their own MIDI beats and MIDI musical phrases as well as live audio.

Ask learners to choose either pitched instruments (keyboard, strings, bass, guitar etc.) or unpitched instruments (acoustic or electronic drum kits) from the GarageBand menu. They can further finesse their instrument choice by making more specific choices within each instrument. For example, a learner might want a string section, and select only violas and cellos. They could then further hone the sound by selecting Romantic (rather than Cinematic, Modern or Pop).

Show learners how to use the audio recorder to record live sounds (such as vocals, instruments or found sounds).
